Can you send automated DMs to new Instagram followers?
Only in a limited test. Meta's public Instagram messaging API has no "new follower" event, so most tools cannot do it. Meta lets some ManyChat accounts use a Follow to DM beta, with eligibility set by Meta and one such message per person per week.
We checked this on October 30, 2026 against Meta's developer docs and the help pages of two Meta messaging partners. The short version: a follow on its own still does not open a conversation for almost every business. If you want Instagram flows that work for every account today, our Instagram DM automation service builds them on the triggers Meta does support, such as comments, story replies and ad clicks.
Below is what Meta's docs say, what the one live beta allows, why password-based "auto DM new followers" tools put accounts at risk, and the follower welcome flows we build instead.
What do Meta's docs say about messaging new followers?
Meta's Instagram messaging docs say a business can message a person only after that person has sent a message. The webhook list has no follow event, so a follow alone gives a tool nothing to react to and no window to reply in.
Three points from Meta's own pages, read October 30, 2026:
- Who starts. The Instagram API with Instagram Login messaging page says your app can message someone "only after an Instagram user has sent" your professional account a message.
- What a tool can hear. Meta's Instagram messaging webhooks reference lists six subscriptions:
messages,message_reactions,messaging_postbacks,messaging_seen,messaging_referralandstandby. None is a follow. - Where follower messages land. New conversations from followers start in the Primary folder; conversations from people who do not follow you start in Requests.
Chatfuel's help docs say the same thing in plain words: Meta "does not expose a 'new follower' event to any platform." Chatfuel calls this "an Instagram platform limitation, not a Chatfuel one."
How does ManyChat's Follow to DM beta work?
ManyChat's Follow to DM sends one opening message 5 to 10 minutes after someone follows you, or straight away. Meta decides which accounts are eligible, reviews eligibility weekly, and allows only one Follow to DM message per person per week across all businesses.
What happens after someone follows you, in the beta
ManyChat's help article on the feature, updated October 29, 2026, sets out the rules:
| Rule | What ManyChat's article says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Beta, not available to all accounts | You cannot plan a launch around it |
| Who decides | "Eligibility for this automation is determined by Meta, not Manychat"; reviewed weekly; may be removed later | Access can appear or disappear without anything you change |
| Plan | Not tied to your ManyChat plan; Free accounts get an opening DM and one follow-up with a link | A bigger plan does not give access |
| Connection | Only for Instagram accounts connected through ManyChat's Unified Instagram onboarding | Older connections must reconnect first |
| Frequency | Runs once per follower; unfollow and refollow does not repeat it | No second welcome |
| Meta's cap | One Follow to DM message per user per week; if a person follows several accounts using it, only the first sends | Some new followers will never receive yours |
| Opt-in | The person must reply or tap a button (not a URL button) to open a 24-hour window for the rest of the flow | The first message must earn a reply |
Chatfuel lists a similar "DM to Follow" feature in Alpha for "a limited group of creators", with no release date. Neither vendor claims a public Meta API for it, and Meta's changelog for Instagram messaging lists no follow event up to October 28, 2026.
Is it safe to use a tool that auto-DMs every new follower?
A tool that logs in with your Instagram password to message every follower works outside Meta's API, which is the kind of automation that gets accounts limited. A Meta-gated beta inside an approved partner tool is a different case, because Meta controls who gets it.
The tell is how the tool connects. An approved tool sends you through Meta's own login screen and never asks for your Instagram password. Browser extensions and "growth" services that ask for your password, or that promise a welcome DM to every follower on every account, have no Meta event to listen to, so they act as you inside the app. Our FAQ on whether Instagram can ban you for automated DMs covers the terms and the risk tiers in full.
ManyChat itself warns that being a Meta partner does not protect an account that sends "too many automated messages too quickly". Even inside the beta, a pushy welcome message that people ignore or report adds to the negative feedback Meta watches.
How do you welcome new followers without a follow trigger?
Give new followers a reason to message first. A pinned post with a comment keyword, a story that asks for a reply, Ice Breaker questions in the chat, or an ig.me link in your bio each start a conversation Meta's API supports for every account.
Ways to start a welcome conversation
| Method | What the person does | What the automation can send | Available to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pinned post with a keyword ("Comment START") | Comments the keyword | One private reply within 7 days; more messages for 24 hours if they respond | Every professional account |
| Story that asks for a reply | Replies to the story | Full conversation inside the 24-hour window | Every professional account |
| Ice Breakers in the chat | Taps a suggested question when opening a chat | The matching answer and follow-ups (sent as messaging_postbacks) | Every professional account |
| ig.me link in your bio or link page | Taps the link and sends a message | Full conversation inside the 24-hour window; in an existing chat a ref value can pick the flow (messaging_referral) | Every professional account |
| Follow to DM (ManyChat beta) | Follows you | One opening message; more only after a reply or tap | Accounts Meta selects |
The comment route has limits worth knowing: Meta's private replies doc says only one message can go to the commenter, within 7 days of the comment, and it lands in Requests if they do not follow you. Our step-by-step guide to comment-to-DM automation in GoHighLevel shows the build, and the same logic works in ManyChat or n8n.
What should a new-follower welcome message say?
One short line that thanks them, says what you help with, and asks a question they can answer with a tap. The reply is what opens the 24-hour window, so the first message exists to get a response, not to sell.
This applies to the beta and to the comment and story routes. A pattern we use for service businesses:
- Opening line. "Thanks for following. We help clinics fill their calendar. What brought you here?"
- Two or three quick-reply buttons. "Prices", "Book a call", "Just browsing". A tap counts as a response.
- One answer per button. Prices sends the price page; Book a call sends the booking link and logs the contact in your CRM; Just browsing ends politely.
- A stop path. Any "stop" reply ends the flow and tags the contact, which section 5.2(b) of Meta's Developer Policies requires: people must be able to opt out, and requests must be respected immediately.
Booking and CRM logging are where most of the value sits. Our lead automation service covers the routing after the first reply, and our AI chat agent page covers letting AI answer the follow-up questions.

Why can't GoHighLevel send a DM when someone follows me?
GoHighLevel connects to Instagram through Meta's messaging API, and Meta's webhook list has no event for a new follow, so a workflow has nothing to trigger on. What it can react to is a comment or an incoming message. Use a comment keyword, a story reply or Ice Breakers to start the conversation, then let the workflow take over.
How do I get access to ManyChat's Follow to DM?
You cannot request it. ManyChat says Meta determines eligibility and reviews it weekly, and the feature appears in your workspace automatically if your account is selected. Make sure Instagram is connected through ManyChat's Unified Instagram onboarding, because older connection methods are excluded. Access may later be removed.
Can I send a welcome DM to followers who followed me before?
No. Neither the Follow to DM beta nor Meta's public API lets you message existing followers who have never messaged you. Old followers can be reached with a post or story that invites a comment or reply, which then opens a conversation you are allowed to automate.
Do welcome DMs to new followers go to Requests?
Meta's messaging docs say new conversations from followers start in the Primary folder, and conversations from non-followers start in Requests. A person who has just followed you is a follower, so a follow-triggered message should reach Primary, unlike a private reply to a non-follower's comment.
Is there a limit on how many follow welcome DMs Instagram allows?
ManyChat's article says Meta allows only one Follow to DM message per user per week. If someone follows several accounts that use the feature that week, only the first account's message is sent. The flow also runs once per follower, so unfollowing and following again does not repeat it.
