Case study at a glance
| Client | HirePrep Inc., an investment banking interview preparation company |
|---|---|
| Problem | Candidates prepared from static guides that could not tell them what they were actually bad at, so study time went evenly across topics they had already mastered and topics they had not, with no simulated pressure before the real interview. |
| What we built | An adaptive investment banking interview prep platform: a diagnostic assessment, a learning path that drops mastered topics and expands weak ones, timed mock interviews with branching follow-up questions, a browser-based modelling test environment, and a readiness score benchmarked against candidates who received offers. |
| Service | Product strategy and development |
| Timeframe | Built in 8 weeks |
| Reported results | Offer rate 3.1x higher for candidates completing the full programme versus self-study controls. 18,000 candidates through the platform in two cycles. Study time down 40% for equivalent readiness. 240,000 mock interview sessions completed. Technical accuracy up from 54% to 88% on average across a programme. |
All figures are reported by the client. Results depend on how much of the programme a candidate completes and their starting level.
What problem did HirePrep have?
Investment banking recruiting runs on a small body of well-known technical questions and a much less well-known set of behavioural expectations. The guides everyone buys cover the first and are useless for the second, and neither tells a candidate what they are actually bad at.
Someone reads a four hundred page guide front to back, spends the same effort on accounting they already know as on LBO modelling they do not, and walks into a superday having practised nothing under pressure. The founder had recruited for a bank and then coached candidates privately, and the coaching worked because it was adaptive: find the weak spot in twenty minutes and spend the remaining time there. That is a one-to-one process, and it does not scale, which is what the client wanted to change.
What did we build?
A diagnostic assessment across accounting, valuation, modelling, markets and behavioural sets a baseline. From there, the learning path is adaptive, topics a candidate demonstrates are dropped, weak areas expand into more practice, and difficulty scales with performance rather than progressing linearly.
How a candidate moves through HirePrep
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic assessment | Covers accounting, valuation, modelling, markets and behavioural, and sets the baseline that drives everything downstream. |
| Adaptive learning path | Mastered topics drop out, weak areas expand into more practice, and difficulty scales with performance instead of a fixed, linear curriculum. |
| Timed mock interviews | Pressured, with follow-up questions that branch on the answer given, since the follow-up is where real interviews separate candidates. |
| Separate scoring | Responses are scored on technical accuracy and on structure and delivery separately, so a candidate sees which one needs the work. |
| Modelling test environment | A browser-based environment for practicing financial modelling under timed conditions. |
| Bank-specific question library | Reflects the differences between firms rather than treating investment banking interviews as one generic format. |
| Spaced repetition | Weak concepts resurface on a schedule instead of being practiced once and dropped. |
| Readiness score | Benchmarked against candidates who actually received offers, not an arbitrary point scale. |
What changed?
Reported by the client: candidates who completed the full programme got offers at 3.1 times the rate of a self-study control group, 18,000 candidates went through the platform in two cycles, study time fell 40% for equivalent readiness, 240,000 mock interview sessions were completed, and average technical accuracy rose from 54% to 88% across a programme.
HirePrep: reported results
| Measure | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Offer rate vs self-study | 3.1x higher for candidates completing the full programme |
| Candidates through the platform | 18,000 across two cycles |
| Study time for equivalent readiness | Down 40% |
| Mock interview sessions completed | 240,000 |
| Average technical accuracy | 54% to 88% across a programme |
Cutting study time 40% while raising accuracy is the result that matters most to candidates, and it comes entirely from not re-teaching what someone already knows. Several university finance societies now run the platform as their standard preparation, which shifted acquisition from individual sales to institutional and was not the original commercial model.
Why does adaptive practice beat a static guide?
A static guide spends a candidate's time evenly across everything in it. An adaptive platform spends it on what the diagnostic shows they actually need, which is the same reasoning behind why one-to-one coaching worked before this existed, just without a coach in the room for every session.
Technical accuracy, before and after
The 40% drop in study time is the direct result of that reallocation, not of the material getting shorter. A candidate who already knows accounting cold does not repeat accounting drills; the platform routes that time into valuation or modelling instead, wherever the diagnostic found the gap.
Why score technical accuracy and delivery separately?
A technically correct answer delivered badly and a well-delivered answer that is technically wrong fail an interview for different reasons, and a candidate needs to know which one is happening to fix it.
Real interviews separate candidates on the follow-up question, not the first one, which is why mock interviews branch based on the answer given rather than running a fixed script. Practicing under that same branching pressure, with the two failure modes scored apart, is closer to what a superday actually tests than reading model answers in a guide.

How does a candidate move through HirePrep?
A candidate takes the diagnostic assessment, gets an adaptive learning path built from the gaps it finds, practices through timed mock interviews and a modelling environment, and tracks progress against a readiness score benchmarked on real offer outcomes.
- Diagnose. Assessment across accounting, valuation, modelling, markets and behavioural sets the baseline.
- Adapt. The learning path drops mastered topics and expands weak ones, with difficulty scaling to performance.
- Practice. Timed mock interviews with branching follow-up questions, plus a browser-based modelling test environment.
- Score. Technical accuracy and structure/delivery are scored separately, so the candidate knows what to fix.
- Track. Spaced repetition on weak concepts and a readiness score benchmarked against candidates who received offers.

This is custom software, not a GoHighLevel or CRM project, the same kind of build as our Coo, Our Fusion, Drop My Drip, DEMP, Spirit Airlines, GoHangars , Farmers Market Haul and ITS case studies. If you run an ed-tech, test-prep, or credentialing product with a diagnostic-and-practice model behind it, see our custom web applications page, or SaaS product development if you plan to sell the platform to institutions the way HirePrep now does.

More questions about building an adaptive interview prep platform
How much does it cost to build an adaptive learning platform like HirePrep?
It depends on scope. This build took 8 weeks of product strategy and development for the diagnostic assessment, adaptive learning path, mock interview engine, modelling environment and readiness scoring. Custom software is quoted per project, not from a fixed price list, so book a call for a number specific to your build.
How long does a build like this take?
HirePrep took 8 weeks. Timeline depends on how many subject areas the diagnostic needs to cover and how much branching logic the mock interview engine needs at launch.
Can this work outside investment banking prep?
Yes. A diagnostic-plus-adaptive-practice model applies to any credentialing or test-prep product where a static guide currently treats every learner the same: consulting case interviews, medical or bar exam prep, and technical hiring assessments are common fits. See our solutions pages for the problem-first side of what we build, then book a call and tell us what you're building.
Does the platform grade answers automatically, or does a person review them?
HirePrep's scoring is automated, splitting technical accuracy from structure and delivery. Whether a build needs automated scoring, human review, or both depends on the subject matter, and gets decided during strategy against what "correct" actually means for that content.
Who owns the code and design after the build?
You do. Confirm the specifics in your contract, but the standard is that what we build for you is yours.
