Why is GoHighLevel missed call text back not working?
GoHighLevel missed call text back fails for five reasons: the call never reached your HighLevel number, your own cell phone's voicemail answered it, the feature is off, no number can send SMS, or the caller is on DND. Check them in that order.
How a call becomes a missed call text
The second cause is the easiest to miss. HighLevel only sends the text when a call goes unanswered past your incoming call timeout. If HighLevel forwards the call to your mobile and your mobile's voicemail picks up first, HighLevel sees an answered call, and no text goes out. Nothing looks broken, which is why it takes so long to find.
Every fix below comes from HighLevel's own help articles on Missed Call Text Back and phone number settings, read on October 17, 2026. Where a step is our own advice, the page says so.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No text, and the call is not in the HighLevel call log | The call never reached the HighLevel number | Point your public number at HighLevel, or forward the carrier line to it |
| No text, call log shows the call as answered or completed | Your phone's voicemail answered the forwarded call | Set the incoming call timeout to about 20 seconds and turn on Call Connect |
| No text on any call, ever | The feature is off in this sub-account | Settings > Phone System > Voice > Voicemail & Missed Call Text Back |
| A failed message in the conversation with a reason | No number in the sub-account is eligible to send SMS | Finish A2P 10DLC registration or toll-free verification |
| Works for most callers, not for one | That contact is on DND or replied STOP | Check the contact's DND settings; you cannot override an opt-out |
| The text comes from a different number | The dialled number cannot send SMS, so HighLevel picked another | Nothing to fix; this is HighLevel's fallback working |
| The same caller gets two or three texts | Repeat calls, or a workflow sending as well as the native feature | Use one method; add a wait step or tags in a workflow |
Did the call actually reach your HighLevel number?
If the call does not appear in the HighLevel call log, HighLevel never saw it, so it cannot text the caller back. That happens when customers dial a carrier or desk-phone number that rings your office first and only forwards some calls, or none, to HighLevel.
Missed call text back watches calls to numbers inside the sub-account. Your Google Business Profile, website and ads often still show the old carrier number. Two ways to fix it:
- Publish the HighLevel number. Put it on your Business Profile, website header and ads, so calls land in HighLevel directly.
- Forward the old line to HighLevel. Set unconditional forwarding at your carrier so every call reaches the HighLevel number, which then rings your team. Conditional forwarding (forward only when busy or unanswered) means HighLevel only sees the calls your desk phone already missed, so your timing changes.
Keeping your existing number is usually possible. Our answer on keeping your business phone number in GoHighLevel covers forwarding and porting.
Is your cell phone's voicemail answering the call?
When HighLevel forwards a call to your mobile and your mobile's voicemail picks up first, HighLevel counts the call as answered, so it never treats it as missed. This is the easiest cause to overlook.
How long the phone rings before the call counts as missed
HighLevel's phone settings article explains the timing. If you leave the incoming call timeout blank, it defaults to 60 seconds, which gives the call time to reach your personal voicemail. HighLevel's own guidance for that setting: leave it blank or at 60 seconds if you want missed calls to go to your cellphone's voicemail, or set it to about 20 seconds so the call reaches the CRM voicemail before your personal one.
Two settings fix it. Both live on the phone number itself: Settings > Phone System, open the number, then the call forwarding and timeout options.
- Incoming call timeout: about 20 seconds. The Missed Call Text Back article recommends 10 to 20 seconds. Shorter than 10 and you cut off callers your team would have answered.
- Turn on Call Connect. The person answering hears a whisper message and must press a key to accept the call. HighLevel describes Call Connect as ideal for missed call text back because it stops voicemails being marked as successful calls. The whisper uses text-to-speech, which HighLevel bills at $0.00084 per 100 characters.
One limit to know: HighLevel says whisper messages only play for calls forwarded to external phone numbers. A call answered in the HighLevel web, mobile or desktop app does not play the whisper.
Is missed call text back switched on in this sub-account?
Missed call text back is a setting per sub-account. In the sub-account, go to Settings, then Phone System, then the Voice tab, open Voicemail & Missed Call Text Back, and tick Enable Missed Call Text Back. Write the message, send yourself a test and click Save.
The exact path from HighLevel's article, checked October 17, 2026:
- Click Settings in the bottom-left of the sub-account.
- Open Phone System in the left menu, then Voice in the top menu.
- Open Voicemail & Missed Call Text Back, then Missed Call Text Back in the side panel.
- Tick Enable Missed Call Text Back and click Customize to write the message.
- Send a test to your own number, then click Save.
If your message uses a merge field such as the contact's first name, HighLevel notes it only fills in when the system already knows the caller from an earlier interaction. A first-time caller gets a blank, so write the message so it still reads well without the name. Agencies with many clients should check this per sub-account, since a snapshot does not always mean the setting is on.
Can any number in the sub-account send SMS?
GoHighLevel missed call text back needs a number that is allowed to send texts. If no number in the sub-account is registered for A2P 10DLC or verified as toll-free, HighLevel logs a failed attempt in the conversation with the reason, and the caller gets nothing.
HighLevel changed how it picks the sending number. It first tries the number the customer called. If that number cannot send SMS, it falls back in this order:
| Priority | Number HighLevel sends from |
|---|---|
| 1 | The number the customer called, if it can send SMS |
| 2 | A number you have successfully texted this contact from before |
| 3 | Your default outbound number |
| 4 | Any other eligible messaging number in the sub-account |
This matters for call tracking numbers, number pools and unverified toll-free numbers, which often cannot send texts. If the fallback finds nothing, open the contact's conversation: the failed attempt shows the reason. The fix is registration. Our A2P 10DLC registration guide walks through the brand and campaign steps and the common rejection reasons.
Is the caller on DND or opted out?
HighLevel never sends a missed call text to a contact on DND, whichever number it would have used. If the text works for other callers but not one person, open that contact and check the DND settings for SMS. A contact who replied STOP stays opted out until they opt back in.
Do not try to work around an opt-out with a second number. Opt-out rules apply to your business, not to one phone number, and the FCC's newer rules require opt-outs to be honoured promptly. Our note on the FCC's 2026 opt-out changes explains what counts as a valid opt-out.
Why does GoHighLevel missed call text back send several texts to one caller?
HighLevel's native feature sends a text for every missed call, even when the same person calls again a few minutes later. Someone who tries three times gets three texts. To send one, HighLevel suggests using its workflow recipe instead, with a wait step of about 20 minutes or tags for first and second calls.
The other cause is two systems texting at once. If you switched on the native feature and also built a workflow that texts on a missed call, both fire. Keep one. The native setting is quicker to switch on; a workflow gives you control over timing, business hours, tags and a follow-up if the person does not reply. Our answer on workflows sending duplicate messages covers the re-entry settings that cause the same problem in other workflows.
How do you test missed call text back properly?
Call your HighLevel number from a second phone that is not on DND, let it ring past the timeout without answering, and check that the text arrives. Then open the call in HighLevel and confirm it is logged as missed. Repeat once outside business hours.
- Use a phone that is not the forwarding destination. If you call from the phone the number forwards to, that phone is busy with your own call and the result tells you nothing.
- Do not answer, and do not let your mobile's voicemail answer. With a 20-second timeout and Call Connect on, the call should end in the CRM voicemail.
- Check the text arrived and which number sent it.
- Open the contact's conversation. If there is no text, look for a failed attempt with a reason.
- Test again after hours, since that is when most missed calls happen.
When should you get help with missed call text back?
Get help when calls run through an IVR, number pools, call tracking or several locations, when A2P registration keeps getting rejected, or when you would rather an AI agent answered the call than texted afterwards. Those setups have more places where a call can be marked answered.
Missed call text back is the minimum. The next step up is an AI receptionist that answers the call, books it and texts a confirmation, so fewer calls are missed in the first place. The wider playbook, including what the text should say, is in recover missed calls, and the workflows we build around it are on our GoHighLevel automation page. For a real example, the Smile Bright dental case study reports 50 to 60% fewer missed enquiries over its first 14 to 21 days.
Questions people ask about GoHighLevel missed call text back
How long does GoHighLevel take to send the missed call text?
The text goes out once the call counts as missed, which is when your incoming call timeout runs out. HighLevel recommends a timeout of 10 to 20 seconds. After that, delivery depends on the carrier. A 60-second timeout delays the text and risks your personal voicemail answering first.
Why did my missed call text come from a different number?
The number the caller dialled probably cannot send SMS, for example a call tracking number, a number pool number or an unverified toll-free number. HighLevel then sends from an eligible number instead: one you have texted the contact from before, your default outbound number, or another registered number in the sub-account. HighLevel says this is intended.
Where is missed call text back in GoHighLevel?
In the sub-account, open Settings, then Phone System, then the Voice tab. The setting sits under Voicemail & Missed Call Text Back, in a side panel called Missed Call Text Back. The incoming call timeout that decides when a call counts as missed is on the same screen under the voicemail settings.
Does missed call text back work after hours?
Yes, HighLevel says the feature is especially useful for after-hours calls, since it acknowledges the caller while nobody can answer. If you want a different message at night, such as your opening hours or a booking link, build it as a workflow with a business-hours condition instead of the single native message.
Can I send the missed call message on WhatsApp instead of SMS?
Not with the SMS feature, but HighLevel has a separate Missed Call WhatsApp Back feature for that. WhatsApp business messages need an approved template when you start a conversation, so set up and test the template before you rely on it. SMS is still the safer default for callers who do not use WhatsApp.
Does missed call text back cost extra?
There is no separate fee for the feature, but each text is billed like any other SMS from the account. HighLevel's phone pricing guide lists US SMS at $0.00747 per segment, plus a carrier fee of a few tenths of a cent per message, at the time of writing. Keep the message short to stay in one segment.
Is missed call text back legal?
A text back is a reply to someone who just called you, so it is informational, not marketing. Keep it that way: say who you are and how to reach you, and leave promotions out. You still need a registered number, an opt-out path and respect for DND. Our page on what time businesses can text customers covers timing rules.
