What did HighLevel announce about WhatsApp marketing and MM Lite?
On October 19, 2026 HighLevel told agencies to move WhatsApp marketing sends to MM Lite, its name for Meta's Marketing Messages API, before October 13, 2027. HighLevel says Meta confirmed that date as the day marketing messages stop being delivered through the Cloud API. Service and utility messages stay where they are.
The entry is titled Action needed: move your WhatsApp marketing to MM Lite before October 2027. It gives about twelve months of notice, and it says existing phone numbers and approved templates carry over without re-creation or re-approval, and that running campaigns keep running during the switch.
For a business that texts customers on WhatsApp through a GoHighLevel sub-account, the practical question is not whether to move but when, and what to check first. The rest of this page covers both, and one detail that does not line up with Meta's own pages.
Does Meta's own documentation confirm the October 13, 2027 date?
Not in anything we could read on October 21, 2026. Meta's Marketing Messages API changelog, which runs to October 19, 2026, has no entry that ends marketing sends on the Cloud API. Meta's pricing page gives one 2027 date, and it is about a different feature. Treat the date as HighLevel's report of Meta's position until Meta publishes it.
Dates in Meta's docs and in HighLevel's notice
What Meta's pages do say, with the date each was read:
| Date | What the page says | Where |
|---|---|---|
| September 3, 2025 | The /marketing_messages endpoint accepts marketing messages for both MM Lite and Cloud API | Meta, Marketing Messages API changelog |
| November 19, 2025 | Marketing Messages API for WhatsApp becomes generally available and is renamed from MM Lite API | Meta, Marketing Messages API changelog |
| April 6, 2026 | A business can choose to disable marketing messages on the Cloud API; the /messages endpoint then rejects Marketing templates with error 131063 | Meta, Marketing Messages API changelog |
| September 24, 2026 | New guidance on template routing and category mapping between Cloud API and Marketing Messages API | Meta, Marketing Messages API changelog |
| October 2026 | "Max price" for marketing messages in open beta | Meta, max price pricing page |
| Q2 2027 | Max price becomes generally available and required in eligible geographies; fixed, published rates for marketing messages then apply only on the Cloud API | Meta, max price pricing page |
| October 13, 2027 | Marketing messages stop being delivered through the Cloud API | HighLevel changelog only |
The April 2026 entry shows that Meta already lets a business turn Cloud API marketing off, which fits a future forced move. The Q2 2027 line is harder to square with it: Meta says published rate-card prices will apply to the Cloud API at that point. Both can be true if the Cloud API keeps carrying marketing for a while, or if Meta's plan changed after those pages were written. We could not tell which, and neither could any source we found.

How do I turn on MM Lite in a HighLevel sub-account?
Open Settings, then WhatsApp, and click the banner to enable MM Lite. HighLevel sends you to the WhatsApp account screen, where you open the Requests tab, click Respond, continue through the prompt and confirm the permissions. HighLevel says it takes a few minutes per sub-account.
- In the sub-account, go to Settings → WhatsApp and click Enable MM Lite.
- In the WhatsApp account interface, open Requests and click Respond.
- When the ROI prompt appears, click Continue.
- On the access request screen, confirm the permissions and click Finish.
HighLevel recommends starting with the sub-accounts that send the most marketing, because they see the delivery and reporting benefits first. It also says accounts that use the WhatsApp Business App next to the API (coexistence) can be switched without disruption.
What changes for a business that sends WhatsApp marketing?
Marketing sends move to an endpoint that adds engagement-based delivery, richer templates and conversion reporting. Cloud API keeps working for marketing until the cutoff but, per HighLevel, gets no new marketing features. Service and utility messages are untouched.
| Item | Cloud API marketing sends | MM Lite (Marketing Messages API) |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Standard | Prioritizes delivery using engagement signals; HighLevel cites a Meta test with up to 9% higher delivery for high-engagement messages |
| Template extras | Current formats | Animated GIF headers and deep links that open an Android app; automated creative enhancements in a pilot |
| Reporting | Delivered and read | Message-to-purchase tracking, and cost per template, per click and per delivery |
| Numbers and templates | Existing | Carry over with no re-approval, per HighLevel |
| Service and utility messages | Cloud API | Stay on Cloud API |
| Price per message | Meta's rate card | Not stated in HighLevel's entry |
The "up to 9%" figure is HighLevel's summary of a Meta test, not something we measured. HighLevel's entry does not say which businesses or countries the test covered, so it may say little about your audience. Judge the switch on your own delivery and click numbers after a few weeks.
Prices differ a lot by country, and the cutoff does not change that. Our WhatsApp message price comparison lays out Meta's October 2026 rate card for the US and Canada, the UK, Australia and the UAE.
What should an agency or business do before October 2027?
List every sub-account that sends WhatsApp marketing, enable MM Lite on one busy account as a pilot, check that each marketing template sits in the right Meta category, and keep proof of opt-in for every contact. Then roll out account by account, with months to spare.
- Count your senders. Export the sub-accounts that have a WhatsApp number and note how many marketing templates each sent in the last 90 days. Accounts with no marketing sends need no action.
- Pilot one account. Pick a high-volume account, enable MM Lite and compare delivery and click numbers with the previous month. HighLevel says campaigns keep running during the switch, so a pilot does not need a freeze.
- Check template categories. Meta added guidance on template routing and category mapping on September 24, 2026. A template that Meta treats as Marketing but you built as Utility is the likeliest thing to break at a cutoff. Our note on the rebuilt WhatsApp template builder shows where categories are set.
- Keep the consent record. WhatsApp marketing needs the contact's opt-in. Store the date, form and wording in custom fields, the same way we do for SMS. See what happens when a contact replies STOP.
- Watch Meta as well as HighLevel. Re-read Meta's Marketing Messages API changelog each month. If Meta publishes the date, record it on the day. If it publishes a different date, the plan changes.
- Do not rush the last 30 days. A switch that takes a few minutes per account still needs a test send and a look at the first week of reports.
For a business with one or two WhatsApp-enabled sub-accounts this is an afternoon of work. For an agency with fifty, it is a rollout, and a spreadsheet of accounts, owners and dates is the right tool. Our GoHighLevel automation service covers this kind of account-by-account change, and the lead automation page shows where WhatsApp sits in a follow-up flow.
What is still unknown?
Whether Meta has published the October 13, 2027 date anywhere public, what MM Lite sends cost compared with Cloud API sends, and whether HighLevel will bill the two differently. HighLevel's entry does not give a price, and Meta's pages we read do not connect the date to a rule.
- The date. One source, HighLevel, states it. We could not find Meta's announcement.
- Cost. HighLevel's entry links to Meta's pricing but does not summarize it. Rates are in our WhatsApp price comparison for the Cloud API rate card.
- Other platforms. This page covers HighLevel. A business that sends WhatsApp through another provider should ask that provider what it plans.
Frequently asked questions
When must GoHighLevel WhatsApp marketing move to MM Lite?
HighLevel says before October 13, 2027, the date it says Meta confirmed for ending marketing delivery on the Cloud API. We could not find that date in Meta's public documentation on October 21, 2026, so treat it as HighLevel's notice and plan to finish well before it.
Do I need new WhatsApp templates for MM Lite?
No. HighLevel says existing phone numbers and approved templates carry over without re-creation or re-approval, and that current campaigns keep running while you switch. You can add new template features, such as GIF headers, afterwards.
Will my WhatsApp reminders and receipts stop working in 2027?
No. HighLevel says service and utility messages stay on the Cloud API as they do today. Only marketing sends are affected. If a reminder is really a promotion in Meta's eyes, it may be classed as marketing, which is why we check template categories first.
Does my business have to do anything if it never sends WhatsApp marketing?
No. A sub-account that only sends service or utility messages, or has no WhatsApp number, has nothing to enable. Check the list of templates sent in the last 90 days to be sure none of them is classed as Marketing.
